.... also, Chambers, at least, gives it as 2 words but having checked online I note the Wiki does give both 1 and 2 word options.

Towards the end of the week, could someone please give a fuller explanation of 9ac? I'm sure I have the right answer (if its Bogart film) but I can't make any sense of either the Pierce or tge melons. Thank you. I had to sleep on some of this, trickier than recent ones, I thought.

Hi, how is it indicated that these two clues rhyme? Would have helped to know that as I banged my head looking at 3d in vain .

9a - the "pierce" synonym is what you might do to a boil (yuk!) but remember it's "cut" so you'll only see the first 4 of its 5 letters. The word that goes around this is a type of Melon but, as I said earlier, I've never heard of it although Geeker says they are popular in the US.
