4 D. Legible, plain. Leg, member, and anagram (dithering) of Lib and the E from the end, finally, of 'conservative'.

I've a couple of guesses at the words, but can't figure out the 'how' !

26 Ally colleague. Wally, clot, idiot, drops the W, wife.
11 Goof, idiot, dolt etc. Goo, muck + F, fellow.
