Chris - Guinness never travelled well. They tell me now the best pint is in Nigeria (biggest brewery).

Geting - don’t do it. If you acquire the taste, then no beer come near, as the ad goes.

Having said that, I’ve had some great pints in The Bunch of Grapes on Brompton Road, and The Horseshoe Bar in Glasgow (108 feet of counter).

It may come as a surprise to learn that Paddy’s Day was historically one of the driest days of the year in Ireland - pubs weren’t allowed open. This changed in the early ‘60s. The few places that you could get a drink (legally) were Railway bars, if you were travelling, hotels, as a guest, and there was always the mail boat to Holyhead.

The notable exception was the dog show organised by the heathen Protestants (God bless them) of the Royal Dublin Society - it had a beer tent. Needless to say canine aficionados were myriad, for the day.

Brendan Behan and Patrick Kavanagh were generally first in. Spitting venom at each other from opposite ends of the counter (there was no love lost, and both were cantankerous). Eventually, Behan heads for the WC, trips over a dog and shouts out:- "What the fcuk is a dog doing here”.

Guinness is in a weird partnership with my alumni association; I can’t figure out how it works, and the dollar amount is secret, but it certainly pays a fortune just to advertise during football games.

There was a brewery strike in Liverpool in the summer of 1970. The only drink available was Guinness. A fine pint, one of the best, but not when the sun is cracking the flags.

Swarb - during high summer even I hit the cider. Guinness try occasionally to introduce a light variant, which invariably fall flat.

Aristo - Guinness were early fans of advertising. I imagine whatever they’re paying is well worth it. What surprises me is the amount they spend on advertising in Ireland, where the stout sells itself.
Guinness have always been wealthy - Diana Mitford used to rib her husband Bryan, saying their wealth came from the poor of Dublin! (Well Diana, what first attracted you to the multi-millionaire Guinness heir? 😁).
