It may come as a surprise to learn that Paddy’s Day was historically one of the driest days of the year in Ireland - pubs weren’t allowed open. This changed in the early ‘60s. The few places that you could get a drink (legally) were Railway bars, if you were travelling, hotels, as a guest, and there was always the mail boat to Holyhead.
The notable exception was the dog show organised by the heathen Protestants (God bless them) of the Royal Dublin Society - it had a beer tent. Needless to say canine aficionados were myriad, for the day.
Brendan Behan and Patrick Kavanagh were generally first in. Spitting venom at each other from opposite ends of the counter (there was no love lost, and both were cantankerous). Eventually, Behan heads for the WC, trips over a dog and shouts out:- "What the fcuk is a dog doing here”.
