We finally cracked it as well after a little while of staring at the grid. Some really clever and creative clues, I'm afraid personally I did find the endgame a little GWIT but well done to Tuds nonetheless!

I have a full grid except for the first letter of 37d, which I can’t figure out at all. A hint would be appreciated. Re the extra words, I have 4 of them, total letters 23 in number. My best guess at the 5th letter is another 3 letter word (not in 2d). Any comments?

Eenk - there is only one 3-letter word in the 'extra 5 words'.

37d - what letter do you expect to begin 'to be sold again'? What might Australians use to abbreviation 'registration'? The Chambers entry is under a 5-letter word with a double 'g'.

Thanks jbird, the problem was that I had managed to put the wrong last letter in!
I shall have to think further on the extra words.

I agree that you should not need to know music theory, but at least we didn't get another northern meadow....

No-one else seems to be concerned that the instruction given by the misprints is at odds with the last word created by obeying the instruction. Surely it's a contradiction.

It isn't really; the appearance prior to the final change is common in technical and legal texts for the purpose of doing what it says.

All finished fine at weekend…but still no parse for 31A … have definition with letter change … not a problem as doesn’t affect anything … but nudge if it isn’t a spoiler appreciated …

crates - I was stuck on this too! - abbreviation for bale inside short word for woe (as in 'alas').
