I've manged to fill the grid and got the instruction from the across clues. My significant problem at the moment is finding the five words to be removed in the down clues. Is there one in 2 down?

I now have four extra words with a letter count of 27 - does that seem correct?

Yes, one in 2D.

There is a five letter extra word, so depends on which ones you’ve already got.

The words are not smaller ‘fillers’ (in, from etc) so a quick review of the down clues’ wordplay should give you the correct five.

My five letter extra word is the final one (in clue order) that I have currently found. I cannot see how to interpret (yet) the five extra words - are they in the correct order?

Very much no.

Three of the five are sort-of-crosswordy.

Hard to help further without giving the game away; just to say it is a satisfying solve, so worth persevering.

I think that I may be honing in on the solution IF one of the six letter changes produces a something meaning pregnant.

I've not had a chance to start this one yet, but I see it's a carte blanche. Just a reminder that, although bars and clue numbers must not be shown in the grid, if anyone wants to explore how bars and clue numbers might nevertheless work it is possible that this may be handy: https://codepen.io/dcwarwick/full/wvdebxB. Remember to set the grid to 13x12 (cos I didn't!) and the symmetry to 180° rotational.

(I mean 12x13, of course, cos I seem to have done it as rows x columns)
