Full disclosure….

I knew 8a and 22a were anagrams but no idea what they were, so I looked them up online.

Does that count as cheating…?

Well, I use an anagram solver, so I'm in no position to cast the first stone 😉

swarbrules — I finally grokked your hints.

I am not familiar with "duck" used to mean what "penetrates" "we need camouflage" in this clue.

Maybe it has an origin like that of "goose egg"?

Hi Daz,

It's "duck" as in, say cricket, when a batter "is out for a duck" ie zero

Yup, sure sounds as if a "duck" and a "goose egg" come from similar zeroes.

In this clue duck means zero or 0. This then becomes a letter o. It’s used in cricket to denote a score of zero runs. “He was out for a duck”

Hi all, I’ve put in an answer for 7d but am now thinking it must be wrong because of the 21a clue. Can anyone explain or give a hint about the beginning of the 7d clue - “Shaking tail end” ? I think this must be what I’m missing / not understanding.

“Shaking the tail end, watch …” means drop the last letter off a three-letter word meaning watch, then add a + synonym for lad. The rest of the clue is the definition

Thank you very much quisling! In that case I think I have the right answer, I just hadn’t fully worked out why.
