I'm back from quite an emotional but very enjoyable family get together and therefore a little drunk. But I think this the best Prize for a long time. Thanks to Picaroon. I don't think I'm totally on the wavelength but every time I get a clue I'm impressed. Nowhere near finishing still and not likely to happen tonight but I thought Picaroon deserved some praise for this.

Jenna, the 3-letter abbrev. in 1a is pretty common in crosswords. I think of it as an acronym for a 3-word phrase (4, 3 and 3 letters) that's frequently used in USA. [The phrase was used in World War I with a different meaning.]

Thanks, geeker. I'm certainly familiar with the phrase, it's the abbreviation that I've never heard being used.

I think the abbrev. is mostly a UK thing.

Indeed, there was a satirical tv show here in the 1980s with that name
