18a - Determine lapse in law (6) ?E?LVE (there may be a misprint in the definition)

Are my letters correct only I can't find any word with this pattern in Chambers? Or anywhere, for that matter!

Brendan, there’s a phrase in the preamble that you may have thought you could deal with later, relating to a cell containing more than one letter. But it’s integral to the gridfill.

Ah, that is exactly what I thought - thanks again Quisling, much appreciated:-)

Okay, as expected I've hit a pre-endgame snagette!

I have a full grid but thus far only 21 misprints - before I put away for the night with the hope of fresh eyes tomorrow, can I just check that the second of the surnames is 7 letters and German sounding and the third also 7 letters made up of a common 4 letter first name followed by ING?

Hi brendan,
The second name is 9 letters, with 2 letters on top of your German sounding name. I assumed the 7 letter version for a while and went down several blind alleys as a result!

Thank you Muraria, I'd reached the going round in circles stage so it's much appreciated.

No problem brendan, the second name eventually gave me the 6,6 name after a bit of googling

That was quite a tussle! Even though I'm familiar with the theme. Locating the necessary cells took longer than it should but the very last component to fall was the last of the 22 letters (even though I'd twigged what the parsing required).

A serious work-out from the ever-reliable Ifor. 👍

Brendan - is your reference to "going round in circles" intentional? It's certainly apposite.

Not with the closed curve appearing.
