Thank you, will37. Kicking myself for that one.

Jordan @69, the issue is not with the first three letters. It's that the two letter abbreviation for "before" should (I think) begin with "o". However it looks as though it needs to begin with "a" for the puzzle to work.

Kitsune, re 27a. The last 2 letters are an abbreviation of a Latin word for 'before'.

I would appreciate a steer on 32a “Stops, in solicitors’ terminology -Scottish primarily”.

32a was my favourite clue this week I think: very deft.

I enjoyed the whole crossword, including all three separate PDMs. I swear this is true: I went earlier today to the Thomas Oken Tea Room in Warwick, one of my favourite crossword-solving haunts, and was enjoying a cream tea in the heat of the day, and got out my nearly-completed grid determined to figure out the theme and endgame which I had not yet spotted apart from vague hints. I had to break off from some careful spreading to duck out of the way of what turned out to be a huge block of falling irony that could have hit me! All done now: many thanks Tringa.

We've moved house this week so am very late to this puzzle.
But what a brilliant work-out. The various PDMs were joyful in this blistering heat. Not sure I could stomach one of these in real life right now, either way round but, as my father grew up in Budleigh Salterton, I know which version I would choose if I could! Nice to see a triple definition in 28a.
