Chambers gives it a "study of human society and behaviour, including ... anthropology, sociology, economics, political science and ..... History!

Wow, the Chambers oracle hath spoken...I've been following chess (Candidates tournament) of late, and it looks like Everyman set a trap of sorts. Kudos to him (her?).

Another enjoyable Everman with the now classic alliterative triplits which got me off to a good start. Thanks for helping out with the parsing of 16 & 19 without giving too much away to those still solving.

I'm having trouble in the SW corner; all I have for 19 is the last letter. Also just the last letters of both words in 20, so you can tell what's missing. Hints please for 19, 20 and 23.
Enjoy your Sunday.

Hi Ethereal,

19d - Is an alphabet clue.

20a - 4 letter "ale" + 3 letter "container" + A (from the clue) - definition is "a large piece of brass" (instrument)

23a - 2 letter "good old" + 5 letter "pancakes" minus last letter/'finally disappeared' all inside 4 letter "cookers" - definition is "frightful apparitions"

Thanks Brendan. That's helped for 20 but I'm not sure about the cookers. Are they those high class European ones which begin and end in the same vowel? And are the pancakes the thin French kind? I can't think of the frightful apparitions...

Thanks Ethereal,

20a - the pancakes are not French. Chambers says they're Russian but don't let that confuse the issue. No, the cookers aren't the Agas, they're more the framework on the cooker on which you place the pans etc. The apparitions are known for their mischievousness and ugliness. apparently:-)

I think post #7 has an unintended (?) spoiler. Ashamed to admit it helped me enormously. Still not got 3d and 14a. I have the second word for 3d but the first two letter escapes me. As for the rest. Found it very tricky but some fell into place with a few PDMs. 23a was my COD. And 10a a close second.

Hi Yevrah, I’ve asked Norah if she can kindly redact the spoiler in post 7. I’m sure it was unintended.

In 3d the first two letters are an abbreviation (and a homophone).
