Tjc, I think you’ve gone astray. The 5, 9 and 7 letter characters have 2, 6 and 6 changes respectively

Thanks quisling. I've spotted one grid error and one error in my counting which brings my 5 and 9 letter names to 2 and 6 changes, so you've helped! My destination needs one further change which produces one real word in the right place but leaves 30d still nonreal.
I have utterly failed to find a set of changes for the 7-letter which leaves real words in their wake. I'm presuming the final instruction means that the letters involved can't have been changed at a previous stage.

And that only leaves the mystery of the graphical representation (and whether the cell at the bottom right of the destination is or is not part of it). My interpretation of the 'not physical' was 'don't play with matches'!

Mine too. I took the word within literally, so I left the shape outside intact

I'm wondering how good my graphics skills need to be, and how many coloured pencils to use!

I would suggest not very. Two would be more than enough, though Brendan will use at least seven …
