As malone says, bobby. The main spelling, of which the answer is a variant, scored the winner in the 1974 World Cup Final

Thanks, Quisling. I had no idea what the 'mad' reference was about, so just ignored it.

Thanks, Malone. I was referencing the BRB on my old laptop CD-ROM version (2003). Never thought to check my lovely pristine hard copy (12th edition), which doesn't get the attention it deserves!

Does anybody know if the more up to date Chambers app works on laptop?

Glad that was of use, Bobbycollins. I don't use apps, so can't help with your query.

A bit late in the day but, if you use Anagram Solver on line it will give you other solutions with less letters if you click on the prompt. Much quicker than previous recommendation I think!

Glad it’s not only me that’s still working on this crossword.
I have 18 answers now😃
I’ve just looked up the 1974 World Cup scorer but not really any wiser as yet.
Any hints for Ox and sloth back off man with ark please? And the 10 letter Union again behind retaining spoil that’s containing silver has taken hours of my life with no reward either🥲

Ha ha I’ve just found, in my pile of papers, inquisitor no 1750 and see I managed one answer on there. Seeing as you all think 1751 is a hard one, I might have another go at that.
I’m gonna have my work cut out, as today there’ll be 1752 won’t there!

CallMe... the Ox and sloth... involves the namne of the most famous 'man with ark' (and you'll have the preceding letter).
Union again... not your first wedding, it could be your second. There's a four letter 'behind' (noun), a common three-letter 'spoil', the usual 'silver' and the usual 'that is'.

callmeishmael, think homonym of a great German centre forward called Gerd. I have had a quick decko at this week's offering. A lot more accessible and you should be able to get going with grid entries fairly quickly, despite the constraints of the preamble.
