I so wanted 20ac to be pony (Shetland). Alas it is indeed Joey, not as cute as a pony but correct!

All done but annoyed at needing two sittings and being unable to identify a 24 that fits the theme and decipher the (unnecessary) cryptic hint. My letters spell out R E C I H S E for the first word. Can anyone help?

C,I and H are incorrect letters (for the correct extra letters the first is in 'bolt', the next letter is in 'reefer' and the third is in 'feasts').

The thematic addition to 24d comes before the equine (7 letters).
