Finished, but in spite of the hints already given here I still can't parse 7 or 29.

Brendan

Re your explanation of 4dn (apologies if this is what you meant), I think you have to split the second word to effectively make it a six word clue.

Hi David,

7a - 4 letter "boatman" + 5 letter "bear"

29a - 6 letter "comic Dave" (see Jono's @15 and my '5) minus "start of ride" it's then "cycled" - this means that the clue can start in any cell but then continues normally until it reaches the end then goes back to the beginning and continues again

Both clues are themed.

I didn’t find this too bad but my FOI was 8 then 5 so the theme was immediately apparent. LOI was 4 as I was seeing the abbreviation as only an anagrind and couldn’t work out where the extra 2 letters came from! My COD was the relatively simple 18 as it was nice to have the attention pointing to us rather than the more common setters. I completed it whilst watching the Winter Olympics so appreciated your subtle references in post 2 Geeker!

Thank you Brendan. That's what I thought 7 was doing but I thought it was too far below the general standard to be right. With your help and a bit of googling I finally unravelled 29. Never heard of him!

Apologies David,

7a - should be 4 letter "boatman" then 5 letter "work may bear this".
