A parsing query.

Shade of pulse, not half making change from shells? P*A*

The solution is presumably PEAK, but I can only make that work by having "EAK" as an alternative spelling of "EKE" and I can't find any confirmation of that in the BRB, Collins or the OED online.

might it be PEAS? they're a pulse, and come out of shells. i don't see how the "shade" fits in, though.

Thanks, chrise. The shade indicates the first letter of "pulse". The definition is "change from shells". PEAK is Native American shell money, but as I said, I can't fully justify it
