Hi Roof,
Happy New Year to you too!
Device/theme it’s the same thing really.
Not sure if others spotted this, but as well as the beginnings of all the 9 letter grid entries, there’s also a double anagram contained in the little 3x3 quadrangle in the middle of the grid.

Like others, I really enjoyed this but am not confident in my parsings for the "briefly mad" 10a and the "vote for one" 21a?

Hi Chris,

I see the "one of two" but it's the "violent exchange" part I don't get. Chambers gives to ??? (the homophone spelling) as "to confront" but that's not necessarily violent so I think there must be more to it?

I took some time to see that too, but, as I said earlier, it's a biblical reference.

Got it, thanks Chris.

Any thoughts on 10a "briefly mad"?

10a you’ll kick yourself, it’s just an anagram about two other letters ;-)

Take the "it" and last letter out and you have " briefly mad", but where does the last letter then come from?
