A rather obscure meaning of “buttonhole” as a verb is “to detain in talk”, so I suppose that fits with “waylay”?

12a
WAYLAY – put together WAY (a style) and LAY (to arrange the cutlery on a table) = to gain someone’s attention in order to talk to them (buttonhole)

The DASH ( - ) in DA-NI-SH was lost on me...so obvious when you see it! Nice clue.
