I'm guessing it's changed to another letter that has a greater resemblance to said feature?

I've just drawn the feature which sounds like the letter. But then I was wrong on the other letter change so I wouldn't set too much store by it!

I'm a looooong way behind on this one.
Is the anwer to 13a something that might be deployed on an aircraft?

Yes. It's an anagram of the first word of the clue containing a word for a mahogany tree reversed.

Could I ask for a nudge with second part of 1d please. (I saw hints earlier which seemed to imply it was part of a compass.)

The definition of 1 down second clue is "as filler". This refers to what fills the hole in the grid, not the stuff you use to patch up cracks in your wall.

Got there in the end thanks to the 27 letters. The end game leaves a lot to the solver's artistic capabilities and I'm sure Brendan will enjoy using his coloured pencils!

Still not absolutely sure what happens where 5a and 4d meet/cross or why the change to the barred letter is homophonic unless an *'s changed to a ....

Sorry new to this - first posting on CS. Need help with13a please 'Daughter shifting mahogany retro blocks slower on landing' (13). Am convinced 'shifting' is anagrind and definition is 'slower on landing'. Am I hot or cold please? Any hints appreciated. I have 1st, 8th, 13th, letters and was going to show in post as X??????Y????Z but unsure whether this constitutes a spoiler?

Hi Platypus, your logic looks right to me. I only worked out the mahogany bit after getting the answer but the last 9 letters should respond to a little pondering on a 'slower on landing'.
