Jigjag, thanks for today's interesting and amusing - and informative, we got science throiwn in - anecdote. It is very good of you to keep us up to date on your progress in the world of coffee. I liked the earlier discussion on (not) all-day breakfasts.

Thanks, glad you liked it. I had my first coffee at age 18 and have had only a few since then. I am now making exciting discoveries and I realise what I have been missing all these years.
It was interesting that the Professor had the same experiece as I did, re so-called All-day breakfasts.

Jigjag - you’re right, of course, Cassie did mishear us when we described the ingredients- it was a bad line so she can be excused - chick peas might provide an alternative ersatz source to chicory - but tell her acorns were used originally. We heard she’s doing an OU science course to become upwardly mobile.

I called in at the market café this morning to ask Cassie a question, which I had forgotten to ask on recent visits.
“Are you by any chance related to the lovely Samantha from the Radio?”
“What programme is she on?” Cassie asked.
“I’m Sorry, I Haven’t a Clue”.
“Then what was the point of asking me, if you don’t know the answer yourself” she rebuked me.
“Apparently she specialises in double entendres” I added.
“Well I specialise in double egg on toast” she replied. “Anyway, she must be a fictional character, because a real woman would call herself Sammy or Sam.”
“Yes I think you’re right. I don’t know any Samanthas who don’t shorten their name.
It left me wondering what Cassie’s real name is.

You have reminded me of the Essex girl who asked the barman for a double entendre, so he gave her one...

Perhaps the lovely Cassie would like a game of Mornington Crescent?

Jigjag. Our registry clerk in the MOD in the 1980s was called Cassie - short for Cassandra. I have fond memories of her famous diets. “I’m just starting one today “, she told me, as I passed her in the corridor going for a run. On my return, I popped into the registry to pick up a file just as she was popping the last of a mini pack of 6 pork pies into her (already full) mouth. She never did manage to finish her diets - or even start.

Thanks, I like it!

Thanks for the clip. I'm not sure if you approve of all the Yorks references. I must ask Cassie about the game.

I like the Cassie story. I too find diets are hard to start, never managed more than a few days. I assume my Cassie is also short for Cassandra, but you never know, I'll ask her.

I have been too busy to go to the market café for a week or so, but something has been troubling me. Orson posted the letter here from the Telegraph reader who was not allowed to have an All-day breakfast after 11 a.m. Surely it could not have been at my café? I decided to ask Cassie if she had refused the request.
“Possibly” she replied, “What was his name?”
“Professor Ramsden” said I.
“Hmm. There’s a Harry Ramsden who comes in here for fish and chips, but I don’t think he’s a professor. I did refuse one person, but he didn’t do what you did, order the brunch without chips. No, he ordered sausage, egg and beans, and also bacon, tomatoes and black pudding.”
“But that’s two meals. Why didn’t you tell him to order brunch without chips, which is much cheaper? I asked.
“I am not authorised to give financial advice” she said.

Jigjag, it's very good of you to undertake so much research on behalf of the pedantic people (and the hungry people). I think Cassie's patience will be sorely tested with all your recent questioning, but she seems to take it in good part. Her 'people skills' seem very good, maybe as good as the breakfasts she serves up?
