Not sure we're on the same wavelength here drxx. The ancient greek city has 6 letters, correct? Feminine in which language?

Yes, 6 letters for the city, buddy - and only the last letter survives the change (adding the thematic element makes the last 3 letters of the entry a Spanish word that fits the wordplay).

OK, my original comment referred to the generic Greek word for "city" which would fit with the crossers - but not with the wordplay.

You've lost me, buddy - I have no issues with either the 'city' or the wordplay (are we dealing with the same African thematic?).

Yes I get that the correct answer used an african currency but I was trying to think why Prospero might have thought 4d was not thematic. Just focusing on Greek city might lead you astray.

Sorry, buddy - I failed to make that connection. I thought you had an issue with how the clue actually worked.

... I think you lost me when you gave the correct count for the city (6 letters) whereas the generic is only 5.
