Point taken Buddy, we Limeys have to remember to be less insular.

But on the other hand, some of the Limeys on this forum do the WSJ and NYT crosswords that are kindly provided by syzygy, so we learn stuff in the other direction as well!

Not a complaint at all on my part; I fully expect all the UK knowledge to pay off big someday (in contrast Mrs. buddy feels we should be saving SOMETHING for retirement). However, I do admit to smiling a bit when the WSJ or Harpers cryptics (which are usually linked here) have a very US-centric reference,

Buddy- Rab C Nesbitt was (well, I hope "was") a TV character, an alcoholic embracing an unemployment life style and ranting to camera. Really not pleasant or funny IMHO.
If nothing else I'm learning what the US state abbreviations and capitals are from the WSJ and H puzzles - oh, and what a BB is!

Thanks Fiery. It's very generous of you but my scraps of paper are now in the recycling! I have got several other entries this week.
Good luck with yours.

Aah Rosalind, may I respectfully demur?

I take it that the character of Rab C Nesbit was a riff on Popular/ignorant notions of Scottishness.

Like Groundskeeper Willie.

Scottish humour is as dry as a good Martini and just as delicious
