Dove, the omitted letters from 1 to 6 down should give you a fair idea of what's required ; )

If you register for the Guardian website and then sign in, does the puzzle become interactive? Only my printer isn't working and I don't want to have to draw a block grid.

Oh for crying out loud!!! It's not as if I didn't notice that word in there all along...
Excellent!!
Now I get it...and, I get it.
Although, due to Covid, I still can't get it.
But at least I'm getting some laughs!
Thanks so much to you, buzzybee and ixion.
Help for the hopeless...

It's Ok, I've just registered and it isn't interactive - I'll print it out at a friend's tomorrow.

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, does one of the downs have five unclued letters?

That was excellent. I made it much more difficult than I needed to by writing the unclued letters next to each clue and trying to make something of that, rather than reading them clockwise in the grid!

One 'undotted i" so to speak, 14a - is a 4 letter word for "cut" + 4 letter word for "group" with middle letter unclued? Only my first 4 letters don't really mean "cut" - "cutting remark" maybe but that's not the same thing. Or is it a sort of &lit? (I've got a theme word)

Hi Brendan,
Chambers has that word as a verb, with a similar meaning to 'cut'
