All finished, bar one, 28ac: Top of oak stake tipped prime succulent (7).

I have OP?N?E? but the only word(s) that fits doesn't seem to bear any relationship to the clue! I have high confidence on the checking letters.

Any hints to the answer would be very gratefully accepted.

Your E is wrong, the last two letters are "prime"/excellent "tipped"/reversed and it's "stake" as in 'bet' (4 letters)

Thank you, brendan. I had noun instead of gerund for 11d. That will teach me not to try to be so smart. I will sit on the naughty step for a bit.
