I'd appreciate a hint for 1d.

jono and chrise
Re 15a: unlike chrise, I took ‘Spenser’s miscalled’ to be the definition, and ‘return of serve’ to be the cryptic part. ‘Serve’’ as the definition would fit the crossers as well, but that’s not how the clue works.
The solution is an archaic meaning of ‘mistook’ as used, for example, by Spenser in The Faerie Queene.

1d relates to the theme of the crossword. The definition is the first 6 words of the clue. The cryptic part is ‘love’ for the first word and ‘hearts, perhaps’ for the second.

Thank you rogissimo. I think I've got that, although it's not a term I've met.

Thanks Rogissimo, I was literally sitting here reading The Faerie Queene trying to find that reference!

PS sorry about the mistype which gave away the answer to the first part instead of quoting the cryptic definition. Hope it didn’t spoil your enjoyment!

“Pouring out Streams of Poison and of Gall,
'Gainst all that Truth or Vertue do profess;
Whom she with Leasings leudly did miscall”

It’s a tough read

I have an answer for 24 down - the only possible answer I think, but can't begin to parse it. Can anyone shed light?

It’s what might emerge from you if you’re emotional, minus a word for ‘sprint’.
