2d tricked me initially as well... and I doubt we will be the only ones to fall into that trap!

I could do with a hint for a couple in the SE corner so that I can get the two unclued lights in that corner.

33a Leading sawyers are spinners, it seems
I have ?O??EN

38a Forbidden guest shows signs of dandy-fever
I have ?E???E

TIA

Jimbo101- 38 is just a 'hidden in the clue' clue - have another look.

33a - a plural of what could be one of Philip Green's stores and 39 across is hidden in the clue.

I've finished the crossword but although like others could not find 14ac 'Audibly criticise Aubrey's sheep run' (5) in any of my dictionaries, I have an entry thanks to t'internet that I am happy with.

Can anyone tell me what the relevance of Aubrey is here? I have never come across it before. I suppose it refers to the author of some dialect lexicon?

Many thanks

Piffleworthy, Aubrey seems to be John Aubrey, 1626-97, English antiquary and biographer. There are some quotations of his in the ODQ, but nothing relating to 14 A. Like you, I found it on the internet - I think the word must appear in one of his biographies.

Just to add to Malone's comment - John Aubrey was born in Wiltshire which is next door to Somerset. I found a reference which shows 14 across as a Somerset dialect word.

Thank you Malone & alwayspuzzled for your replies.

I think this was a borderline unfair clue. Usually when a word doesn't appear in Chambers, we get some sort of indication to its origin or where it might be found. Still, it's all part of the game I suppose!

Piffleworthy, I am less charitable - I definitely think it's an unfair clue! The answer can't be confirmed in any of the main dictionaries, and there seems to be only one mention of it online.
