The i in the second word of 9a comes from the four letter synonym for fit.

We're at cross purposes, mathi. I was mistakenly trying to get my fifth 28 from the last three letters of 9a and the first two of 10a, rather than directly from 22,10.

Good theme for today especially! Rather liked 21a and 15d, good examples of hiding the definition in either one small word or half the entire clue. Have to say the ‘spirit’ and the word for ‘fashion’ were new to me.
