specsaver - cycling means the answer is entered normally except it does not necessarily start in the first cell.

I can't find a second word for the first of the unclued 2-word locations,
so either I'm barking up the wrong tree or it's very obscure. If the first word is a well-known place of confinement at least the tree's right.

Attempts 5 and 6 have foundered. I wonder if someone could help out with a few locations so we know when we've gone wrong. Eg I have the last letter of the 5th across answer as an O, and I have that in the cell below the circled one. Is that right or have I gone wrong in the 1st 5?

Got all the way to answer 19 on attempt 7. Feel I'm getting close....

well, drax, if you're right (as I'm sure you are) it's a bit unfair to have a perfectly good 7-letter location appearing in the first 7 unfilled cells. And I thought I was doing so well ...

I think you're ok there, too (I'm assuming you're numbering them 1 to 20 and ignoring their clue numbers).

Cockie - you’re OK with the final four letters of your seven-letter mental hospital (I thought it might be that too, at first). Just change the first three.

All done - very enjoyable but quite hard work for the end game.

Just a couple of loose ends for me from the initial grid. 10a - ‘poem that’s not advanced’ must give the 3rd and 4th letters of the answer. I know what it is from the definition, but how does that bit of wordplay work, please?

28d - I believe this is just an anagram, but ‘arises’ is then the anagrind. I’d have thought ‘arises’ would be more an indicator that the word is just reversed (in a down clue)?
