I have the theme, the 2 associates and the "name" from the misprints but am stuck on some of the ladder ones...
1a Conservative beset by agents mostly a source of interest. (5)

14a Do well to climb third of trees (5)

14 The definition is 'do well', star etc. It's a four-letter word for 'climb', verb, with the usual 'third of trees'.

1 A. A five letter word for 'agents' loses its last letter (mostly) and the usual Conservative is put inside (beset).

The four clues that lead to the intervening steps of the ladder aren't in ladder order, are they? Only the entries.

No misprint Cloverjo. The definition is 'correct' - the usual abbreviation for European + a four letter word for couple (verb) round a three letter word for area.
