I do like the succinct clues. Here's one I saw recently :

That is a good clue but I often find the shorter clues the most difficult.

I think that a clue is basically a set of instructions disguised as well written sentence, so - fewer words, fewer instructions:-)

Yes, the double definitions tend to be ones you solve quickly or struggle with. A particularly devious one I remember is " Change the law ! " (7), which uses two meanings, both slang.
