33 A four-letter Scottish word for sailor, very similar to a four-letter English word for sailor, with the usual 'special' at the end. There's an unclued L inserted, leading to the 'forces in Canada'. (The 'forces' are natural, not military).

3 D. I've got an Anglo-Saxon scholar, am trying to think of a hint!

spot on Malone, Chambers "us" gives me as does "the" gives our (inf or facetious). In both clues wordplay omits the "a" and the first "e" respectively.

Help please! I have a completed grid with all of the thematic entries. One answer (nay one letter) still eludes me. - 3d 'One familiar with direct Anglo-Saxon scholar' (7). I have ALD?ELM. My copy of Chambers, nor any other aid, does not help me.

The missing letter is the start of a four letter word meaning 'control', think of boats...
