yes -- very clever endgame -- but I had to read the relevant wikipedia page carefully.

Good afternoon all

I've finished the grid, except for 16 across 'Beginning to thaw in groups' historic bars (5)

I have ?uets

The only words I can find that fit are duets and suets.

Any help would be much appreciated!

I've had some difficulty resolving the cryptic elements in some of the clues.

Hi

The answer is shets

Beginning to Haw (the T of thaw was extra) in sets.

You may have got confused because you may have made the change required in the endgame already?

I'm stuck on

32a - Casual blunder following clumsy ship round (7) ??B?IS?
and
27a - About one chief plant (5) DIC?? (an E needs to be removed)

I know 3d is a name but where is the definition? Thanks in anticipation.

casual blunder clue: definition is the last word
plant is the definition for the DIC?? clue (use reversal)

Orson, for 3D I think 'suspect' (noun) could be the definition for the answer to the clue.

Thanks, malone. I've finished the puzzle now. I was quite unfamiliar with the book he appears in. I think the author could have chosen a more sinister sounding name,

Orson, I didn't get the answer to the clue - the thematic stuff came to me. An hour or two later I returned to the clue itself, cobbled together a name, then investigated further (via Google).

Got everything apart from the original entry at 3 down - I'm pretty sure what is needed to replace it. Am I correct in thinking that the original entry is a jumble of an anagram of RONNEPOTSTHEN ? Possibly two synonyms of "jeopardy"? (scratches head)
