Thanks for stepping in with the parse, aristo.

Aristo@26 also gets my vote. I hadn't come across the alternative definition before. It's one to be used with great caution.

Malcolm@45: "Fall" is the definition, which has to be in the same tense as the answer.

Peterm - yes, I realised on reflection it had to be ' fall ', but doesn't it anno as COL lapse D ? So fall as def but fell for collapsed. I liked the idea anyway

malcolmx: Fall isn't part of the collapsed synonym, which is only "in a heap". That's how I read it anyway.

peterm: I had wondered whether either of the definitions was an Americanism, or if both were, but there they were in Chambers, without that label.

Aristo, you read my clue exactly as I intended.

I had assume that the definition in your clue was an Americanism and was surprised, and delighted, that Chambers indicated otherwise. It raised a smile.
