This is all rather annoying. Each "normal" entry has at least one qualifying letter, so letters meet the requirement. However, 1899 is the setter - so I plump for numbers. Can someone please explain how 16d works, because I cannot match the entry to a definition.

Thanks Quisling. Rather stupidly I'd assumed are was a and was looking at the 6-letter anagram.

At one stage I thought that there were several anomalies, but then it dawned that entries in every cell are thematic. Very clever - the setter not me.

......although the preamble is misleading - unless we are meant to enter numbers??

I agree Bobby - I think it very misleading. To me the fact that it says ALL answers need to be written thematically suggests they must be entered as numbers, otherwise the 6 that match their entry length would simply be entered normally. It's a great shame that a decent puzzle has been spoiled by ambiguity at the last.

I'm completely stumped by 27a and would appreciate a nudge if possible. I agree that the preamble is ambiguous but am inclined towards the number requirement too.

Early 20th Century French composer. I wouldn't have described him as avant garde since he is very accessible - hower Wiki does use that description. "Works for minimal acceptance" is the definition.

Thanks bobbycollins, I'd made a goof in entering 22d which gave me a stray N where it shouldn't have been. All done now.
