Uncle W:

2d does being with the digit 4.

L is a single digit number, if that helps?

Thanks jazzlover for your reply. I'm not sure if it helps at all but at least I now know that my 1a has been entered incorrectly. I'll start again and hopefully things will work out.

I would love to check the number/letter equivalents, but I don't want to do it here. Would someone be willing to let me have an email address?

Cockie, I suspect you could check a couple of the more complex answers on here and it would likely tell you if you had the letters right without giving too much away to anyone still solving who didn't want to see

Eg 12d is four digits, one is zero and the other three divide by 3. 35a is 5 digits, with the last three being 37*the first two. 34a is 4 digits, 3 of which are the same. If your answers match those I suspect you have the right numbers.

Uncle w - not sure if this helps but the grid is a bit of a red herring to start with, in my view. you can't really do much other than 1a til you have all the letters identified. You can solve what all the letters are purely from the possible lengths of all the answers. Then work out every clue answer. then work out how they all slot together in the grid.

Thanks smellharry for your contribution. I have the values of letters except for D,L R and T which I think are the remaining 7,8,9,10 as somebody else has reported on an earlier post. Unfortunately I am having great trouble in assigning these letters to their correct values. I am trying trial and error at the moment without much success. Shall persevere for a little longer before throwing in the towel!

uncle_w: The keys to determining DLRT are these clues:

6a, 20a, 27a, 33a, 3d

E.g. 3d: 1000 > LL(A+I+S) -R => L < sqrt[(1000+R)/(A+I+S)] Since you apparently know A, I & S and know R
