The Listener editors have always been prepared to bend the rules a bit regarding unches. Two in five is really quite common. Three in six is much rarer, and I'm not at all keen on it. There are usually ways to avoid that with a bit of grid manipulation.

I guess Augeas couldn't find any other way to include the relevant names, so I'll forgive him as the puzzle was otherwise excellent.

Moving the erased item to another part of the grid means a grid with no excess unching is possible.

Completed the grid, identified the victors, that which changed and the nemesis. Have the main subjects name but am struggling with the '20 cells' unless the full pleas subject includes 'and nemesis'. Does that seem right?

Granam, it's just the full (original) name of the subject. Although 20 cells is given, sometimes things overlap...

Ah, thanks Malone, got it. One of those times where the more you stare, the more you don't see what's under your nose!

Thanks Malone, apart from that last hurdle managed the whole thing without assistance which is a bit of a breakthrough. Quite chuffed. Have been trawling through the back-catalogue of Azeds, one a day, as training. Seems to help!

Granama1, you might have seen it for yourself if you'd put the crossword away for a few hours, days - but I never manage to do that myself! Having the whole grid filled and almost all of the thematic stuff makes you, me, anyone want to do the very last bit.

PS I'm not a regular Listener solver. I avoid all the hard and/or scary ones!

I have the answer and definition for 35a but cannot work out the wordplay, which is presumably "set on gate". Blowed if I can see a set or a gate.
