The end of my last post might have been ambiguous...

W???? comes from the theme word altered to have the last vowel, in the alphabet, as one of the changes mentioned in the preamble.

Thanks, Truron, the 'last vowel' bit might have been confusing. I knew what I was thinking, meaning, but didn't word it well!

I think the best answer for 28D to fit the wordplay and definition is STEWED. It's a common word for "drunk" and comes from STE(p) + WED. Could it be that Pabulum decided to change it but the original clue stayed put?

For what it's worth, I ended up with STOWED, although I can't see STOT as a synonym for tramp - "to bounce; to walk with a springy step". I reckon it's a mistake.
