Fabulous response! One vote each for paul @2, mattrom @27, peterm @12, fiery @28, spike @22, and rossim @23; two each for ginge @16 and mattrom @10; a whopping ten all told for mattrom (with one unspecified from ginge), including six for the winner:

Painting technique involving many layers? (3,7)

For clarity of tone it’s unmatched. I work in oils but am in awe of this medium.

Thanks to all for your brilliant clues- most gratifying.

Like a stuck record, congrats to Mattron, you must get bored of the admin!

But as e'er well deserved.

Aristo that was a great prize - they were wondrous, gobsmacking, heart-tugging paintings - I'm ashamed to say I was totally unaware of him, so thank you for that!

kt: His father was the famous illustrator N.C. Wyeth, and his son Jamie is also a brilliant painter. The family lives on an island near ours in Maine. The house in the first painting is now owned by the Farnsworth Museum and is open to the public.
