Scratch that last post -- I get it ... finally! (But now I think it's even more tortuous!!)

Sorry to add to your misery, brendan, but I also found this pretty straightforward although, like others, I can't fully parse 1a.

Hi Simon. After half an hour of personal head-scratching, this might help (along with Jo's inspired reading of de-tailed) -- think Blackpool.

Thanks, Phil, got it now. I was barking up the wrong tree thinking the official reports were more 'papal' in nature which left a lot of letters to try and explain. Couldn't see past that.

Blimey - I'm glad I didn't notice that option. I had enough trouble parsing it as it was : )

A good puzzle this week I thought . Maybe too many anagrams but some clever clues in there too - 6D was my favourite.

Well, I'm glad everyone enjoyed it and that, once again, it was just me who found it difficult. Although looking back over it this morning it's hard to see why it caused me so many problems last night - but isn't that often the way!?

Also, like last week, if you read the first few clues in order you get a message "of sorts", in this instance:-

Bullet trains - let it go - George - I - agree - very much

and then you have 'Pleasure boats' and 'Fighter planes' at opposite sides of the grid.

No mention though of two which, though obvious, I can find no way to parse.
13 Final half of bowling, champ's losing heart a lot (4,4)
5 Taking last two slices, bistro guest ate in country, not respecting others (5,5)

Would welcome enlightenemnt.
Thanks
