I am v puzzled by the rubric, whose instructions seem inadequate. Have some solutions and it seems as if the "elements" may have to be deducted in order to enter them into the grid, creating non-words? But it doesn't say that - and I can't get crossers to work ... wait till morning ...

I agree. I am in the same boat. Looks like there will be non-words. Will persevere!

Agreed. Solved most of the clues but do not see how to enter them.

The simple rule I thought might be applicable doesn't seem to work with 10A...more Soup!

I've fitted all the words in by putting more than one letter in some lights.
I'm not sure if these combinations are meant to be replaced by something else?
