I found the grid fill quite straightforward, but finding the three muddled birds was simply a pain in the backside that I did not need!!

I think the puzzle title immediately gave the game away.

Agreed 100%. Very annoying grid stare took considerably longer than enjoyable gridfill.

I didn't find the finale particularly painful. Knowing they were in vertical lines narrowed down the field considerably. I found the least obscure one almost immediately and a second shortly after, less common but it crops up occasionally in the Listener. I did need Bradford's for the last one, and that took another ten minutes or so. All are in Bradford's.

Not the worst grid stare ever but I didn't really feel it was terribly convincing in terms of 'value add'. The right hand muddle is also a little unconvincing as it is a less precise entry than the other two. I had a determined look to see if I could find a 4th but it looks like Malva has done his or her homework.

Demeter, I think an answer to your query should appear only in an Answers thread. I will start one!
