I think the answer is "plain -darn " = "stitch" (def)
The term is in Chambers, but I am afraid that I cannot explain the rest of the parsing.

Thank you elle and cerasus. That's not a term which the OneLook Dictionary knows, and I'm not conviced the wordplay is usable except for reverse engineering having already guessed the answer.

Don't despair pedagogue! Some i puzzles are better than this one, although still not as fair as the Guardian's.
