Sunray and Syzygy, thanks. That was really good fun, a well-crafted puzzle.

Thanks malone.
Parsing for a few was not clear. But coming up with a four letter word once you had crossers was not difficult.

We'll enjoy these puzzles for at least two more years.
I just renewed the subscription.

Thanks, Sunray. I never bother myself too much with parsing these - I use the 'it must be an American reference/allusion/definition' to excuse my deficiencies.

Thanks too for renewing your subscription.

Thanks again syzygy (and sunray, sorry I keep forgetting your part), most enjoyable. Love 10a even though it's not used in that context here that I've heard and (w), not often I don't immediately spot such a device.

No need to thank me .
Syzygy has been doing this for a long time.
I just happened to find this thread one day.
When I realized that being in the USA, I have access to the puzzle a lot sooner than he has, I began sending it to him as soon as I got it.

He also posts Wall Street Journal puzzles. They are also fun to do.

Thanks Syzygy.

Well, thank you all, & you're all welcome.

Just the right level for a lazy afternoon. Had a couple of glitches.
Put in TORT twice & was missing (v). Had YARD for (w).

I wondered why there weren't more bars for the 4s.
Duh! They make longer words that are a check.
OK, I'll go do a Sudoku now.

Cheers.

Great fun. Thanks, syzzie, and sunray (I didn't know that you're a fellow Yank). I too put a couple of ?s by the fours.

Thank you sunray and syzzie; I have actually completed it without any help except for 24 ac.
My 91 year old friend wants Trees read at his funeral. I think the last couplet is outstanding for rhyme and scansion, even if I don't agree with the sentiment.
Had never come across x before, but not difficult when had 3 of the 4 letters.
Took a long time to get 9ac!

Well, done, Rosalind.

'Ray' often refers to the fish, & 'webs' to spiders.
