Help appreciated.
A 400yard long train travelling at 40mph enters a 5 mile long tunnel. how long elapses between the front of train entering the tunnel and the moment the end of train clears the tunnel?

Sorry, 7 min 50.45secs. Didn’t read it properly. The train travels 5 miles in the tunnel, plus 400/1760 miles as it comes out. So it’s (5 + 400/1760)/40 hours, which is 470 4/9 secs

The front of the train has travelled 5 miles and 400 yards when the end emerges from the tunnel - 9200 yards.
40 mph is 1173 1/3 yards per minute.
Time = 7.84 seconds to 2 d.p.

Then it’s 7 mins 52.5 secs. Just 5.25/40 hours. So x 3600 is 472.5 secs
