Completed the grid and found the subject but because I have not got all the letters needed to find the route I’m flummoxed. Is it too much to ask where to start this? I think perhaps the letter R....anyone willing to help? It may be too much to ask.,,

Hi jogamel, rather than (possibly) spoil it for others I'll happily email you the 9 clues (either numbers, if you have numbered the grid, or using (a), (b), etc) where wordplay is missing 1 letter if you wish.

jogamel - if you google the 9-letter thing to highlight you ought to find what's going on, and who he is fairly quickly.

I have the answer to first across clue.

But I am unable to find answers to down clues using letters in 1a.

I need hints on 2.

The clues can have a missing letter in wordplay or an extra letter in wordplay or an extra word.

1d. Mint housing an old papal coin (5)

4d. Musician starts to play "Eleanor Rigby" with vigour at first (6)

Thanks.

Thanks ginge but need a little extra hint for both.

I have 1 start with E. Sweetie could be Dear or Dearie but no close to coin.

I have 4d start with R. Vigour's 4 letter word starts with B? Plus three first letters from the play E R. Do not see a musician.

Hi again sunray,
The down clues begin with the 2nd & 6th letters of 1a.
1. Sweetie as a brand name (in UK but I'm not sure if universal) of confectionery , quite often mentioned when given to horses.
4. 4 letter synonym 1st letter as given above (1 extra) plus (the 1st 3 letters as you got.

Thanks ginge.
So Marco is a mint.

Not sure which column 4d goes in but will work at it.

sunray, I hope I haven't confused you. The 2 clues you gave start in the 2nd & 6th letters of 1a respectively.
