I think Norah is doing a BOGOF on the threads - Begin One, Get One Free... The Cafe/Chat one would be useful - some of the chatter on Pedants United must get missed by new members, or people assuming (fairly) that we only ever discuss split infinitives, the misuse of words etc. I'm a fickle person, I will flit from one to the other.

I hope that you are of the opinion that there's nothing wrong with a split infinitive, malone. The criticism came from obsessive grammarians who objected because it's not possible to split an infinitive in Latin.....

ChrisE, you're quite right - split infinitives in themselves don't bother me unduly. It's a different matter if they're part of an inelegant, clunky or poorly worded sentence.

Well done Mathsprof for bringing up the 2,500 - I hope PU2 is as well supported and thanks all who have contributed to PU1.

Special thanks to Malone, Grunger and Jigjag - some of your material, Jigjag, was inspired and worthy of a larger audience!

Off to Nottingham tomorrow for the double header, Forest v Blackburn, then the One Day final on Thurs at Trent bridge. I will be supporting Glamorgan as I almost live in Wales.

Thanks for the kind words. I think some of our less PU discourses were great fun. One person's random musings, bits of silliness sparked off all sorts of weird and wonderful (and entertaining) stories and posts.

PS I hope Ivor Apple has mastered the art of yelling 'Granny Smiths, six for a pound... all other grannies only a fiver each' through the confines of his properly worn mask.

Perhaps this thread is so long I have missed someone else posting, but my pet hate is the frequent use of "... none of them were ..." As none is a short form of not one, it follows that the correct usage is "... none of them was..." Or is I wrong?!

Keppel, it is for that reason that I started a new PEDANTS THREAD 2021 which so far has zero posts, this thread had become too long and unwieldy.

Could you please set the ball rolling and repost your query in the new thread.
