That's good football knowledge. I was surprised to see in the Times crossword yesterday that I was expected to know the German for dance - which I didn't. Surely that was an unreasonable clue though it was easy to guess.

I have done nothing but decorating in the last week or so. I haven't seen TV or listened to the radio and only read the sports pages. But my window cleaner rang today to say he is working from home. Have I missed something?

yes i'm sure I've missed bits everywhere, but I am not going to look for them- it's taken too long already and I'm not bothered about perfection.

I liked the cricket clue in Times yesterday, though it took me ages to get.

Grunger,

Glad to hear you're not a perfectionist.
I'm afraid all cricket clues/answers are deleted from my brain instantly, though I can't even remember there being one!

Malone - spotting ' Hammers ' ( my team, coincidentally ! ) reminded me of a nice clue I saw for the word, which was
Share out around two thousand pounds

MalcomXword, that's a good clue - and no football knowledge necessary!

Yes all these recent -ess words indicate that the setters are reading this thread. I love the obscure ones, protectress, patroness and your nice one today.

You mention jigjag, but I think he has been self-isolating since well before the crisis. My trip to McD at Cheshire Oaks hoping to meet Ivor Berger is off, and I dont suppose if I tried to find Ivan Napple, it would be an essential journey, even if I do need fruit and veg.

Very nice West Ham clue

Glad you're still enjoying the 'ess words - definitely better than 'eff' words!

A pity to hear that Jigjag's self-isolating, and from before the crisis too. He's maybe had enough of people, he bumped into so many characters!

Not really pedantry but three things I came across today which I found interesting:

A woman who climbs up tall buildings is not a steeplejackess but a steeplejill (sorry if that's been mentioned here before).

The Anglo-Saxon for queen bee is beomoder (bee mother).

On Desert Island Discs, the actor Brian Cox rejected the offer of a Bible but he chose as his favourite record of all "God only knows".

We all wish JigJag well - I was hoping he might be stuck on a cruise ship with Honor Mishun.

I have received a telegram from Jigjag who is well. He must have read that I need fruit and veg so he gave me the phone number of Ivan Napple. It seems that if I call him, he will arrange for a local greengrocer to deliver my order. It's a sort of Interflora, but called "Intaveg". Well, I am into veg, though not vegan, so I might call him. Apparently you need to be an "approved customer" as they cant serve everyone, but Jigjag will fix it for me.
