Good, Kirky. I deliberately didn't post the first two words of the clue - as I did with the other one - as it seemed to lead too readily to the answer!

Hi xwordfan, it's the usual single letter abbreviation for "are" after a shortened by 1 letter alternative 8 letter word for part of the ear, normally 9 letters (both in Chambers); definition coloured rings.

Although the preamble specifically recommends Chambers, unless I'm wrong the "new member" is not in it, though it is in Collins. Also, I think it would have been better if it had said that the transfers would together form a new member, rather than each spelling one. To me that implies a new member each time.

I'm about 95% done. 36a (normal clue) suggests to me the answer LEK or even LAK but neither doesn't seem to fit the definition.

For 18d I have the letters ?NEI?? but no suitable word goes there as far as I can see so I must be wrong somewhere.

Hi orson, I no longer have the puzzle but do have my worksheet. I don't remember there being a problem with the definition of 36a and your letters for 18d are correct (this clue is one of the 8 referred to in the preamble). I can be more specific and/or parse if you'd like.

Hi again orson, if I recall correctly the each refers to across and down individually.
