Just logged back in to withdraw my clue, chris.

I was referring to the "9 of diamonds" playing card known as the "curse of Scotland" and was convinced that I had seen "d" used for diamonds in bridge notation etc. however a quick look around online finds no evidence for this - so it's back to the drawing board...
