Thanks, Cerasus. I saw the ' hoosegow....Spanish juzgado, tribunal, courtroom, from juzgar, to judge' info in Chambers. I don't know if that's the same as was in MW. For some reason, the hoose in hoosegow makes me think of Scottish terminology - there, prison or jail can be the Big Hoose (normally Barlinnie Prison, I think).

I haven't had shopfronts and mountains... thank goodness!

I remember Lord Rockingham's X1 way back, with 'Hoots Mon' "There's a moose loose about this hoose'

Is calaboose used in common parlance? I seem to remember that from the dim and distant past.

I think 'calaboose' might only be in common parlance in Westerns, Stevie - the rest of the world seems to manage without it!
