Happy New Year already.

NB: There is a typo in the solution grid at 34D, even though the parsing is correct.
It should be EGEST.

7h The Gods of theater answer is new to me.

But the clue being Gods, should the answer be plural also?

No, Sunray - it's only the phrase, using the plural, that leads to the answer, theatre-goers could say they were seated in 'the gods'. I'm not making a good job of explaining, sorry!

Thanks for the puzzle - and thanks too to Syzygy. It wasn't the toughest, but quite good fun.

Thanks syzygy, I always like this format. Quite a few belters with 12d) particularly taking my eye.

Thank you! Very nice. I'm not seeing the full parse for 12a though:

State what's in a mythic box? I will! I will! (4)

I see where the first two letters come from, and assume that my answer's right, but I'm not sure how the third and fourth letters are arrived at.

Hi aristo,
I took it to be Pandora's and the contraction of I will to I'll X 2 so plural.

Thanks, ginge. I too took it as Pandora's box, but I don't see what "state" is for then. I thought he might have meant Illinois (IL). If not, wouldn't "What's in a mythic box?" suffice?

Hi again aristo, I believe it's there solely to "make sense" of the surface.

I think most of us had trouble with that one.

12A - ILL is also a valid abbreviation:
https://www.infoplease.com/state-abbreviations-and-state-postal-codes

So I assume the clue implies ILL'S - "state what is" or "state that is" .
Probably not explaining it well.
